In 2009, Gnarle Ridge was subjected to a wildland fire that threatened this box. According to wildland firefighters, the fire didn't make it to the sight of this box, but I haven't confirmed it. If you head out for this box, please let me know the status. Thanx!
Difficulty level: moderate 1/2 day hike. The box is an easy find. You deserve it if you make it this far!!!
Kid/Wheelchair friendly: definitely not this one.
This was my first trip all the way around Mt. Hood via the Timberline Trail and I wanted to celebrate it with a placement along the way. Mudstumpers placed one at Cooper Spur and the Green Tortuga placed one at Ramona Falls. Gnarl Ridge seemed the most appropriate spot to me.
You can get to the box by either hiking around the mountain the way I did (I took 4 days), or you can head up from Hood River Meadows (off of Hwy #35)towards Elk Meadows (trail #645)on the southeast side of Mt. Hood. Gnarl Ridge Trail (trail #652) cuts off to the northwest towards the top above Newton Creek, then meets up with the Timberline Trail. That's where you'll find the Dreamcatcher.
After finding the treasure, you can either backtrack to the trailhead or continue DOWN the Timberline Trail (#600), back across Newton Creek to the junction of the Newton Creek Trail (#646) that will take you back to the trailhead.
CLUES FOR THE BOX...
You're probably doing, at the very least, a little huffing and puffing once you get to the junction of the Gnarl Ridge and the Timberline Trail. The last thing you want to do is go on a wild goose chase to find the box, so I'll be kind and keep it simple. Check out the Gnarl Ridge trail marker that is anchored to a tree trunk. There in that small gathering of trees, the Dreamcatcher hides in a crook, under a fallen branch and some bark. Please rehide well to keep it out of sight.
Sweet dreams!!
