This box is placed in the old Willow Point Elementary School grounds. Although it's no longer used as a school, the building houses one of Binghamton's local TV stations, and a great area for neighborhood kids to play ball in summer, and sled in the winter!
Directions to Willow Point Elementary School
From Rt. 434 (Vestal Parkway), turn north on any street. Go until you hit the Old Vestal Road (parallel to the Vestal Parkway). Drive on the Old Vestal Road until you come to Gates Road. It's across from the Willow Point Nursing Center. Drive up Gates road, passing Pinecrest Road on your left. The Willow Point Elementary School will be about one block past Pinecrest Road on your left
*** UPDATE ***
4/19/06
There is a lot of downed trees from the winter that weren't previously there, so the path is a little bit more difficult to follow. The "leaning birch" that was previously a clue is also now the "flattened birch". Clues have been adjusted accordingly. Happy hunting!
Clues to Batter Up!!!
1. Park in the parking lot (away from the building is best), and walk around to the back of the building.
2. Walk down the grassy hill towards the playground equipment. You should be able to see three baseball backstops to your right.
3. When you get to the playground, go to the small pavillion and stand in the center. You should be able to see two openings into the woods. Take the opening that is opposite the shorter end of the pavillion. If you stand at the opening, you should be able to see a birch "stump" (about 8 - 10' tall) straight ahead, with the rest of the tree lying across the path
4. Walk straight on the path. The trail may seem to fade out in a couple of spots ... if it does this keep going straight and look for the path to resume. Walk 95 paces.
5. At this point there should be a slight clearing with a large tree in the center. At the base of this tree are several flat rocks. Look under the rocks.
Please contact me when you've found the box, and let me know if it needs any attention.
