In 1898, Louisiana lawmakers approved the creation of an "Industrial Institute and academy" in the 13th Senatorial District. In 1900, Dr. Edwin L. Stephens was named the first president of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, which was to be located on the outskirts of Lafayette on 25 acres of donated land. SLII opened its doors on Sept. 18, 1901, with 100 students and eight faculty members. In 1903, 18 students were the first to graduate from SLII. In 1921, SLII became Southwestern Louisiana Institute when it was designated as one of the state's institutions of higher learning. The year before, it had begun offering a four-year course that culminated with a bachelor of arts degree. In 1960, SLI became the University of Southwestern Louisiana when it achieved university status. In 1999, USL was renamed the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The new name better reflects its status as the state's second largest university and an institution with statewide and national - rather than regional - influence.
The Ragin’ Cajun Letterbox will give you a look at some of the uniqueness of south Louisiana on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Clues:
From I-10 Exit University Ave and head south
Cross over Congress St and Johnston St.
Take a right on Hebrard Blvd and then a left BEFORE the first stop sign on Boucher Dr
Take a right into the first parking lot
Look for the lake full of Cypress trees
If you’re facing the lake from the parking lot, to the left of the lake is the UL Student Union.
Go towards the Union. You will see alligators, turtles, and koi fish. If you walk along the brick pathway between the lake and the student union, you’ll find our Ragin’ Cajun Letterbox hidden in a bush in a brick planter box to the left of the walkway. Straight ahead of the walkway, there is a recycling bin with double doors to the left. If you walk up the steps to the double doors, look under the bush next to the doors. Don’t be afraid to look for it; it’s camouflaged under some pebbles. (Please make sure to replace the pebbles when you’re finished!)
