Basque people came to Nevada at the turn of the century to work as sheep herders in the wide open ranges of Nevada. Elko boasts a significant Basque population and hosts an annual summer Basque Festival. Battle Mountain is also home to a thriving community of descendants of Basque pioneers who celebrate their heritage with a festival each winter and a come-one, come-all picnic each summer.
When passing through Elko, be sure to stop at one of the Basque restaurants for a great meal.
This box is located between Elko and Battle Mountain at the Eastbound Beowawe Rest Stop. Look for the Beowawe Geysers at the base of the far hills, after reading the information sign.
DIRECTIONS:
I-80 eastbound at approximately mile 259.
CLUES:
West of the rest rooms is an open pet area field. Go to the southwest corner of this area with 3 wooden posts in the fence. The box is next to the first post on the east end under a rock. Please be discreet and rehide well.
