Replanted 8-2-2006 by Scarab. We (Wednesday Bowler and Celtic Cat) are very appreciative of his helpfulness as in it's original location this box would certainly have gone missing before too much time passed. Please also take time to contact Scarab to update him on your find of this box.
Clues for this box are authored by Scarab.
Directions:
By public transportation: Carefully study a map and plan to do several of the boxes in this area. You should be able to figure out from the clues and a map how to get from the other boxes to this one. Take the Metro to Woodley Park – Zoo and hike into the area from there. Some clues call for ending up on P Street and walking over to the Dupont Circle Metro. You can also catch a bus on Massachusetts Ave.
By car: From Massuchusetts Ave., NW, turn north on 30th St. or Rock Creek Dr. Park on Benton Place NW. There are no restrictions and few cars there on the weekends. On the weekday, why are you driving in DC?
Across Rock Creek Dr. from Benton Place NW, you will see a narrow open park bordering the edge of the Rock Creek valley. Follow it northeast to the far northeastern corner where you will find a path heading precipitously down into Rock Creek Park. Watch your step.
At the bottom join the main path along Rock Creek. To the left you will see a bridge. Across the creek you will see the main, paved, jogging path. Go right, following the dirt path downstream. You will walk under the Masschusetts Avenue bridge along a fun narrow walkway.
A path will come in on the right. From this intersection turn around and walk 16 steps back the way you came. On your left you should see a small, faint, social trail leading up the ivy covered hill. To the right you will see a tree growing at an angle with a big knot on it. Move so that when you are facing this tree you see Rock Creek and the cars going by beyond it. On the trees immediate left is a pile of rocks. There are a lot of rocks around here so double check that you are in the right place: leaning tree with big knot on it. Under a flat rock, maybe with ivy over it, is your goal.
Return to the main path and continue in the same direction. A little ways ahead you will see why the jogging path is on the other side of the stream. Your way is impassable on this side due to the terrain. Follow the path to the right, leaving Rock Creek behind and following a small tributary uphill.
You will soon come to a complicated intersection. Across the stream to the west is Dumbarton Oaks Park. South, across the stream, and uphill, is Montrose Park.
From here you might be looking for other boxes in the area and head in many possible directions.
To continue and finish a loop back to start:
To your right a small, gravel covered, path goes approximately north-northeast back the way you came but on a higher level. Follow this path. You will soon pass a stone retaining wall on your left. On your right you will occasionally pass yellow fiberglass gas pipe warning markers. The land drops down on the right back to the creeks. After a while on your left you will start to see the back of some embassy or other.
You will come to a big boulder in the path and Massachusetts Avenue beyond. You will find yourself approximately across the street from where you started.
Replace fully re-covering the box from sight.
Always replace boxes in a condition better then which you found them!
