General Information

Calgary is Canada's fastest growing city. Located on western Alberta about 45 minutes east of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and just over an hour east of Banff National Park, Calgary is a 'must visit' for anyone coming to Alberta.

On the western outskirts of Calgary on the north side of the Elbow River valley there is a very interesting natural water filtration/purification project called the Elbow Valley Wetlands Project. It is here that the namesake Letterbox resides.

Adjacent to the Wetlands Project toward the west, is a wonderful area consisting of 227 acres of nature trails. This area was donated to the citizens by deceased rancher Wilbur Griffiths and is called the ‘Wilbur Griffiths Natural Environment Park’. The easy trail through the park is paved with numerous gravel trails of the main pathway. It takes about an hour to hike the main trail (each way) and takes you through the Elbow River Valley. You can get more information on this Park at: http://www.calgary.ca/docgallery/bu/parks_operations/Griffith_Woods_Management_Plan.pdf

Clues

Glenmore Trail is a major highway running from east of Calgary west through the SW part of the city before turning NW at the west end of the city and changing its name to Sarcee Trail.

Find Glenmore Trail on any Calgary City map. Just before Glenmore Trail starts to turn north if you are coming from the east (or starts to turn east if you are driving SW along Sarcee Trail), go west on Highway #8.

About 2 KM along Hwy #8, you will see a sign for the 'Elbow Valley Wetlands Project'. Turn left (south) into the parking area.

There is a interpretive building beside the parking lot where you can quickly see the details of this most interesting wetland which naturally filters and purifies water.

From the interpretive building, look SW where you will see a small hill with a couple of benches and interpretive signs at the top. The elevation gain is about 50' and offers excellent views of the surrounding countryside and the Elbow River Valley.

Once at the top of the hill, you will see a line of big rocks about 5 paces to the east.

The 'Elbow Valley Wetlands Project' Letterbox is an easy find and is located under the most right rock behind several smaller rocks.

Once you have found the 'Elbow Valley Wetlands Project' Letterbox and signed in, thank you for replacing the Letterbox to ensure the integrity of its hiding place.

Please ensure that there are sufficient stones protecting the 'Elbow Valley Wetlands Project' Letterbox so that it is well protected from the view of passersby. Thank you.

We hope you enjoy the search and the beautiful hike through the Wilbur Griffiths Natural Environment Park.

Please contact us by email at peter@brill.ca to let us know you found this box and the condition it is in, plus any other comments you may have. We look forward to hearing from you.

Happy Letterboxing!
