Billy Goat Trail - Section A
Approx. 1.5 miles round trip
Find the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park, Great Falls, Maryland. ($5 per vehicle entry fee) From main parking lot, cross over the canal to the towpath. Pass entrance to the falls overlook. Continue on canal past lock 17 and mile marker 14. Enjoy the view of Rocky Islands then find the marked entrance to Billy Goat Trail Section A (blue blazes).
Follow the blue blazes. The trail makes a quick descent towards the river. Get a nice view of the river and the southern tip of Rocky Island.
Continue following blue blazes very closely and you will come to another nice view of the river where you may see paddlers playing on the Rocky Island wave.
Continue on until you come to a short rocky drop. This drop is marked by a "Y" tree with a blue blaze. At the bottom of the short drop you will be standing in a small, flat, sandy/dirt valley. The river is on your right, the blue blaze trail continues ahead. Turn to your left (dead east)and follow the rocky valley.
Walk 40 paces and you will come to a cluster of 6 small trees. A "canoe" is hiding here under a rock.
