The Bog of Eternal Stench is dedicated to the stinkiest place in Broome County!!! Although multi-million dollar upgrades and two years of construction promised nearby residents some relief from the delicate aroma, occasionally the splendiforous ambiance emanating from the Sewage Treatment Plant still perfumes the local air with it's "unique" bouquet ....
About a week ago, we had one of those nights. As we were driving home and commenting on the delicate scent, we were reminded of a scene from the movie "Labyrinth" where the heroine and her buddies have to pass through a place called "The Bog of Eternal Stench". This was too good of an opportunity for a letterbox to pass up.
I STRONGLY suggest that you search for this box outside of normal business hours. It is a very highly traveled area during the week, but early mornings and evenings during the weekends are pretty quiet.
Directions to the Sewage Treatment Plant:
From Vestal, get onto the Old Vestal Road and head east. Pass the ramp to the JC Flyover on your left and keep going. You will pass NYSEG on your left, then the Vestal/Johnson City Sewage Treatment Plant next door. This is where the Bog of Eternal Stench lies waiting ...

Directions to The Bog of Eternal Stench
1. Park in one of the adjacent lots across from the Sewage Treatment Plant. These are both owned by private businesses, so it would be best if you do this after hours.
2. Cross the street and go to the southeast corner of the Sewage Treatment Plant property. If you reach the NYSEG Power Station, you've gone too far.
3. Between the Sewage Treatment Plant and the Power Station, there is a grassy area. In that grassy area you'll see three big trees that are in a straight line. Walk to the farthest tree.
4. When you reach the farthest tree, look into the brush in an eastern direction. You should see a very large fallen tree just inside the brush. Walk to this downed tree.
5. Step over the tree, and take 5 paces towards the brush.
6. On the ground to your right you will see a small fallen tree. Under this tree, covered with rocks, is The Bog of Eternal Stench.
Once you've located the Bog, please rehide carefully so it has a chance to make other letterboxers "smell forever"! And if you've never seen the movie Labyrinth, set aside a couple of hours, pop some popcorn, and enjoy this movie!!!
