The “Sunny Bay” Letterbox
at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park

THE MARITIME MUSEUM WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE ON JULY 17TH, 2012. As we do not live in the area, we are unsure as to the status of the box. When we return to visit Deltaville again, we will determine its status and replace if necessary.

Difficulty: Extremely Easy. This is a very short adventurous walk for people of all ages. There is some uneven even ground on the walking paths but the trail is entirely flat and well marked.

Directions: Located in Middlesex County on Mill Creek, just off the Chesapeake Bay in the heart of Deltaville, Virginia, the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park offer a unique opportunity to enjoy the "Boat Building " history of our area and the serenity of "river' life. Going east on #33, take a right onto #660 (Jackson Creek Road) across from the Deltaville Convenience Center. The museum is the second driveway on the left.

The Park is open daily during daylight hours. The Museum hours vary, call for exact times.

The Sunny Bay Letterbox - UPDATED 8/2008

Start your journey in front of the children’s garden. If you have children and it is in season you may want to detour by taking a brief scent hunt through the children’s garden. Look for basil, rosemary, eucalyptus, and sage. A new fish pond was put in recently so look hard for small fish if you desire.

Once you have discovered the children’s garden drift right behind the museum toward the water (Mill Creek) and the boat docks. Steer straight into the channel to head out on the dock while you examine the rebuilding of the F.D. Crockett or the replica of the shallop boat used by Capt. John Smith in the founding of our country’s first permanent settlement at Jamestown, VA. Exit through the opposite end of the channel.

With the docks to your stern sail starboard past the tea house to the start of the trail. Two frogs on toadstools will great you as you enter the trail. Be sure to give the Cranes in Love some space as you pass by. When you reach the Roosting Cranes take the left channel. Stay in this channel until after you cross over the land pier. Directly after the land pier, take a moment to sit with the memory of Ruth as you tack right. Passing behind two pelicans, tack left to see Bubba. Bubba is found in the clearing immediately as you exit the woods. Due to shifting sands and tide winds, clues for exploring Bubba have been erased. If you would like to take time to explore this creature on your own, please do so.

Re-enter the woods through the harbor you exited from and now bear left on the path past Jesse and Mabel and then continue straight on the main path. Take a port tack as you follow the main trail, sailing with the cranes on your left. Keep following the path coming about to starboard and look for two foxes snuggling. Reacquaint yourself with the roosting cranes this time keeping then on your starboard and exit through familiar waters.

Cruising by the museum, keep your eye out for Sailor and Sprite. Under the stern of one of these twins you will find the treasure you seek: the Sunny Bay Letterbox.
