With the men away in World War II, women were hired and trained to do ‘men’s work’, building Liberty Ships on the Home Front in the Richmond Shipyards. Their motto was “We Can Do It!”
From the parking lot, the Rosie the Riveter National Historic Park is to your left. Check out the exhibits and sculptures commemorating the ship-building women. Then continue along the Bay Trail to the south-east, around the Marina, noting exhibits along the way. After about a 1/5 mile, you will come to Jay and Barbara Vincent Park, on the tip of the breakwater. Continue along the trail, skirting the playground, to the western tip of the park where there are 3 flagpoles. To the left of the flagpoles is a drinking fountain, and 10 feet or so along the metal fence, the groundsquirrels have dug a convenient hole in the iceplant. Under a rock is your prize! The Bay Trail continues all the way to Berkeley if you want a longer walk/bike ride.
Back at the parking lot, if you go to the right along the trail, there is Amini’s By The Bay, a deli and coffee shop where you can pack a picnic, and next to it is Salute, an Italian restaurant with a beautiful view.
