..cause the vandals took the handle.
Chevy Chase, Walter Becker and Donald Fagon were all members of a local college band, The Leather Canary. (The Leather Canary was later renamed Steely Dan.) The Leather Canary often played at a local bar where Bob Dylan was known to hang out.
One night, Walter and Donald were singing while Chevy was playing the drums. Much to the dismay of the bar owner, Bob was dancing on the tables. Bob was kicked out, stumbled across the road and passed out. When he awoke the next morning he found himself under a pump with no handle. The locals will tell you that this is the pump he sings about in Subterranean Homesick Blues; “The pump don’t work 'Cause the vandals took the handle.”
Once you have located the pump follow the fence to the left. Between posts 10 and 11 on the inside of the fence is a stump. The stump has 2 holes in the top, one small and one large. The small hole, covered by stones, holds the letterbox
