Seven Narnian Lords
NOTE: BOX 5 HAS BEEN REPLACED! It is in a new, safer hiding spot--just follow the edited clues below.
The creation of this series was a team effort between letterboxers Halfhobbit, Sonfronto and Guitargirl, to celebrate reading and finishing The Voyage of the Dawn Treader from The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. It is the story of King Caspian, who embarks on a quest in his ship the Dawn Treader, to locate seven missing Narnian lords, who have not been seen in seven years:
“On my coronation day, with Aslan’s approval, I swore an oath that, if once I established peace in Narnia, I would sail east myself for a year and a day to find my father’s friends or learn of their deaths and avenge them if I could.” King Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Chapter 2
Are you ready to begin your own quest? Then launch your ship at the Saratoga County Boat Launch Site on the Sacandaga Lake. Be sure to bring your own pen and ink pad. A compass is helpful but not required. There is also a beautiful park and picnic area along the lake shore, so feel free to bring a lunch and, once you have located the Seven Lords, relax and enjoy the tranquility of the lake.
Begin in the little town of Edinburg, and turn onto North Shore Road (also State Route 4) heading toward Hadley. After approximately 5 miles, you will cross a bridge and see a sign welcoming you to the Town of Day; not far past this, on the right, is a driveway with a sign for the boat launch site. Pull in and park in the parking lot on the right.
1. Box 1--“Lord Bern”, the Lone Islands
Start in the boat launch parking lot. Take the footpath, keeping the lake on your left. After crossing over a stone culvert for a stream that runs under the path, take approximately 40 steps and look to your left at a pile of rocks around the foot of a pine tree. Climb the rocks and stand with the lake on your left and your back against the tree. Two steps will put you right on top of Lord Bern’s hiding place.
2. Box 2-- “Lord Octesian”, inside a dragon’s cave
Continue straight along the path until the whole thing comes out on North Shore Road. Turn left and follow the road. Cross the road at the "Town of Edinburg" sign (before the bridge) and climb down the bank to the creek. Under the corner of the bridge just where it meets the road you will find the Lord Octesian.
3. Box 3-- “Lord Restimar”, on the banks of Deathwater
Climb back up the bank and cross the bridge. With your back to the lake, enter a path between three boulders. Follow it into the woods. The trail crosses a stony bridge and after that gets a little fuzzy; you want to continue due north to an old stone fireplace in a clearing at about 340 degrees. From the fireplace, head straight towards the sound of the stream. Slightly upstream there is an "island" with four trees. Two lean towards the bank, and one leans away; the fourth stands straight and tall, and cradles Lord Restimar under its roots over the water.
4. Box 4-- “Lord Rhoop”, the Dark Island
Head back to the old fireplace. Stand facing into the fireplace, then look to your left. Through the trees, you will see a large, black, misshapen stump; Lord Rhoop hides in the leaves beneath it. (From the fireplace, the stump stands at 140 degrees).
5. Box 5-- “Lords Argoz, Mavramorn and Revilian”, Aslan’s Table
Back to the bridge, cross the road and head into the park again, making your way back to the parking lot. At this stage in the journey, Caspian's crew wondered if they could possibly find the other three lords so close to the World's Edge, and they were nearly ready to give up and head home. Don't give up! At the edge of the parking lot stands a brown bathroom building. From there, glance to the north (towards the road) and notice a wall of stones along the bottom of the bank. Inside the wall hidden behind a white rock rest the Three Enchanted Sleepers, Lords Argoz, Mavramorn, and Restimar.
We hope you enjoy your quest! We had fun setting up this series. Stamps 1 (Bern) and 4 (Rhoop) were carved by Sonfronto; stamps 2 (Octesian) and 3 (Restimar) were carved by Guitargirl, and Stamp 5 (Argoz, Mavramorn and Revilian) was carved by Halfhobbit. Please contact us when you find our series and let us know if any of the boxes need work!
Also look for the “Sand Creek Bear Box”, placed by Chris in this same park!
