*** Part of my TX Birding Trail Series ***
Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 100 yards RT)
Recommended Ink: brown & yellow
Status: alive
Over a century ago, one million Attwater's Prairie Chickens graced the Texas and Louisiana gulf coastal prairie. Today, less than 1% of their native coastal prairie habitat remains and in 1998 it was estimated that only 260 remained, with less than 60 living in the wild. It has been on the endangered species list since 1967, and this box is dedicated to its continued survival. You can find it at the refuge with the same name as the box.
Directions:
The refuge is located 6.5 miles northeast of Eagle Lake, off FM 3013, or south from Sealy on Highway 36 to FM 3013, then west for 10 miles to the Refuge entrance. Drive about 2 miles to the Visitor Center and park.
Clues:
Walk to the picnic tables in front of the Visitor Center and continue to the private gravel road that branches off right from the main auto loop road. Go right on the private road about 50 yards to a small sign on the left that says private. About 10 steps before the sign is a large tree on the left a few steps off the road. The microbox is hanging on a branch on the back side about 5 feet high. Please be discreet by pretending to look for birds in the tree.
