This is one in a series of boxes planted in the state game lands of northeastern Pennsylvania. If you seek this box, please be aware of hunting seasons. I recommend wearing blaze orange any time of year. I don't recommend seeking this box during deer season, except on Sundays.
State Game Lands 110 is located in Berks and Schuylkill Counties. The parking lot you want is easily accessible from Interstate 78. Take Exit 23 (Shartlesville). From the exit, head NORTH on Mountain Road. After about .3 miles, Mountain Road sharply turns right. At that point, continue STRAIGHT onto Forge Dam Road. Take this road until you reach an SGL parking lot on both sides of the road, with a brown gate across the road. (Should be about 1.5 miles.) Park in either lot.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a moderately challenging hike. There is some uphill climbing, and some rocky stretches, with several stream-crossings. If you enjoy long challenging hikes, I think you'll find this one is well worth it. If you enjoy the AT, you'll like this. But if you have young children or just don't like this sort of hike, you might want to skip this one.
ALSO PLEASE NOTE: The SGL map is a bit off. The trail doesn't do exactly what that map implies.
Clues:
* From the lot, head north on the road past the gate.
Very soon, head left onto Sand Spring Trail. You'll be following this trail all the way to the Sand Spring itself. The trail is blazed teal. (Teal? Who blazes with teal?)
* Cross a stream, and head up a steep hill.
* Cross a smaller stream.
* Go up another steep section, and then cross numerous trickles, then through a very rocky area.
* Eventually the trail goes along the creek, then crosses it again.
* Once you've left the creek behind you this time, watch on your left for a broken "SAND SPRING" sign near a double-blazed tree. Bear left at the sign to find the spring.
* Finally, after all your hard work, you are rewarded with a beautiful spring beneath an enormous dead hemlock tree.
* From the hemlock, spot a downed V-tree NNW about 10 paces into the woods.
* Head to the root ball of the V-tree. SPOR on the right side of the root ball.
Please rehide well.
