A ROAD/TRAIL Box.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ROAD portion - about 12 miles, more or less, depending on route choices. You may want to do one part on foot.
START HERE: In front of Ski Blue Marsh, on the Robi-Bern Road near Pa. Route 183 just south of Bernville, Pa.
1. From the front of the ski area, drive east until you meet route 183. Find the green highway sign. Add together the miles listed on this sign.
If the total is even, turn right and make an immediate left.
If the total is odd, turn right and continue straight.
2. Drive 1.7 miles, then turn right into a parking area. At the back of the parking area, find "Notice" underlined. Count the number of words after but not including "Notice".
If there are an even number of words, exit the parking area & turn right.
if there are an odd number of words, exit the parking area & turn left.
3. Drive, take the first right, and stop opposite the parking area on the left (.6 miles). Find the sign to the left of the parking area entrance that identifies the parking area.
Even number of words - continue straight, across span, road curves right, a trail crosses road before guard rail, to first right. (1.2 miles)
Odd number of words - continue straight, across span, road curves right, a trail crosses road before guard rail, to first left. (.7 miles)
4. Drive .3 mile to yellow gate on right. Count number of yellow metal posts.
Even number of posts, continue in same direction that you were heading to an almost 4-way intersection(.7 miles) and turn left.
Odd number of posts, continue in same direction that you were heading to an almost 4-way intersection(.7 miles) and turn right.
5. Drive 1 mile to a road veering off to the right with a "No Outlet" sign. Follow until the macadam ends and the road becomes dirt. Unless you are in a high clearance vehicle, you should park and walk this section. Continue until the dirt road ends. Count the number of metal guard rail posts. Reverse back over dirt and macadam to "No Outlet" sign.
Even number of posts, turn right.
Odd number of posts, turn left.
6. Drive until you see a "Share the road" sign on the right after a pond and before a concrete span. Park safely where you can, and get ready for the trail portion.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The TRAIL portion - about 8 miles, more or less of single track trail with possible mud and significant elevation changes, depending on route choices.
1. From "Share the Road" sign, pass trail to right, cross concrete span, pass another trail to right, see a green highway sign ahead with two arrows on it. How many towns listed on this sign? Stand with the sign at your back.
Even number of towns, recross span and take trail on left.
Odd number of towns, take trail to left before span.
2. Follow trail some distance; cross two wooden bridges. Find the number sign on the right of the trail about 75 paces before you cross macadam at "Stop and proceed with caution".
(You may wish to reconsider your route choice at this point. The next section can be very muddy.)
If the number is even, continue on trail in same directon, cross the macadam by"Stop and Proceed with Caution", and continue until you once again reach macadam and a parking area.
If the number is odd, find the closest parking area.
3. At the parking area entrance, find the sign with a reference to the approval of one of the armed services. (You may wish to reconsider your route choice at this point. The next section involves distance and hills.)
If Coast Guard, cross the concrete span, road curves right, pick up the trail on the right just before the beginning of the metal guard rail.
If Navy, follow the trail to the left of the parking area that goes down and crosses a wooden bridge.
Continue uphill, over, and down, as the trail turns left, joins a road and continues to a gate.
4. Count the red stripes on the gate posts. (You may wish to reconsider your route choice at this point. The next section involves steep climbs with switchbacks and steep drops.)
Even number of stripes, follow southwest heading to dirt trail.
Odd number of stripes, cross the wooden bridge to dirt trail.
5. Trail passes pipe field on left, climbs, flattens with a view of a concrete span on the right, drops, crosses a wooden bridge, climbs steeply with switchbacks, drops, flattens, and continues to a Y just before the rock steps beneath a metal guard rail with sixteen posts. From the northern-most metal guard rail post, it is 20 degrees and five giant steps to Mobius (s)Trip.
Follow the trail NNW to complete the (s)Trip.
NOTE: Usual cautions apply, especially regarding hunting season.
