When we were driving down the Taconic Parkway with Phynster, she pointed out a huge sculpture of a head that was located in an open field on the top of a hill. What was it, who made it, and how on earth were we to get to it??? Mystery solved! This box is dedicated to Phynster, who introduced us to the park. (And our apologies to her for beating her to planting a box! ;-)
The Taconic Sculpture Park, located in Spencertown, NY is located at the end of Stever Hill Road. It is well worth a visit, as the sculptures are amazing. And during a visit to the park, you will likely meet the friendly artist, Roy Kanwit. The park is located at his home, and it is open seasonally on weekends from 9-5 p.m. If you visit his website, you will find a phone number and other info about making a visit. http://www.fairpoint.net/~kanwit/
As we wished to respect his private property and the generosity Mr. Kanwit shows in opening his home grounds to visitors, we chose to plant our letterbox in a more public location.
To get to the box… visit the cemetery adjacent to St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church, 5219 County Route 7, Spencertown (at the junction of where County Route 7 meets State Route 203.) It is a beautiful place, and we were amazed by the amount of thyme planted around the cemetery. Please be respectful as you visit.
-Once in the cemetery, find the grave of Mrs. Jemima Carey Huntington, directly behind the church.
-Turn around and look at the wrought iron fence (and the really cool tombstones it contains.)
-Walk around the fence until you come to the 82nd angel.
-With your back to the 82nd angel, scan the tombstones for Disbrow’s ball. Walk to it, being careful to not “Bump” into it.
-From Disbrow, be an “Ambler” and walk to the concrete shed where you will find a family’s stone bearing the same name as the road on which the Taconic Sculpture Park is located.
-From their friends the Gills, find the little bronze McComb girl who is ready for the weather.
-Go over and introduce yourself to her. When you are acquainted, walk due North to Charlie Wilbur who, when we planted the box, picked up his “hammer and saw” where we should hide the letterbox.
-From Charlie Wilbur, walk approximately 8 paces (1 pace = 2 steps) to the fence.
-Now turn to the West and walk to the little trail at the end of the fence.
-Standing with your back to the last fence post, spot 3 shaggy barked trees, about 7 feet away.
-You will find the box under vines, between the 2 trees closest to the cemetery. PLEASE re-hide the box well.
