FREDERIC CHURCH’S AGRICULTURAL ADVENTURE

There are 2 boxes in the Frederic Church series.

Find the NYS Park that was the home of Frederic Church, famous painter from the Hudson River School of American landscape painters. His home is a Persian-style “castle” nestled into the hillside along the banks of the Hudson River.

When you enter the park you drive along the windy road until you come to the lake on your right. Slow down there will be a parking lot off the road, down the hill a little ways on your right. Park in the parking lot.

On foot, head out of the parking towards the Cosy Cottage, the Church Family’s first home on the grounds. You will notice 2 big barns and 1 little shed on your right. Walk through the space between the barns. Head SOUTHEAST towards the shale outcropping. You will see a rustic concrete wall ending with a beehive shaped ornament. Go to the crack in the wall. Reach through the crack. On the south side of the wall, on the ground, are 2 flat rocks. Under here you will find your prize. As you are stamping notice the restoration of the orchard on the SOUTH side. Please be discreet, this spot is in the open and easily seen from the parking lot.

Please be sure to reseal the baggies and box carefully so that the contents stay dry. Then rehide the box in its original location, completely hidden from view. You may enjoy driving to the top of the hill and seeing the dramatic view of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains from the house and/or taking a tour.
