A Pitcher Plant according to Webster is an insectivorous plant with leaves shaped into tubular pitchers holding secretions for trapping and digesting their prey. Pitcher Plants according to my sister in law (who introduced me to them) only live in bogs and so began my search for a plantable bog.
Shafran Conservation Area at 104 Eaton Road in Tolland satisfied all of my requirements and there your hunt should begin. Park in the trees, go around the gate and soon come to a sign board with a map showing where the bog is. The loop where I planted is a bit over a mile.
After reading the messages go right on the orange trail, cross a bridge, come to trail sign (stay on orange to the right) at next trail sign orange goes left (stay on orange) down into a valley, which is where the “bog” is supposed to be but today it looks like a stream. Cross the bridge and as you head out of the valley look right for a seven foot stump. Follow the fallen end to the Y in it’s branches for box #1....
Continue on orange to a set of trail signs and go right on yellow. Ignore all unmarked side trails and eventually come to where you can walk between two trees and touch them both without any effort. From here count 70 steps to find two large old oak trees side by side. The left one has an awesome hole for hiding a box but is surrounded by barbed wire so go to the right of the right tree and look in back of the log on the ground for box #2. Be aware of wire near this tree also.
Many are the options for returning to your car. We went left on pink (finding an old Plymouth on the way) and then right on orange.
