Monsters of NY Series 1 of 6 - Cemetary Dog
Although cemetary ghost dogs can be found across the world, this spot near Wales, NY has an especially sinister side. A butcher of a doctor long ago was said to murder his patients and bury them near this spot, offering their limbs to the demon dogs in exchange for guarding his secret. The dogs eventually betrayed him and he committed suicide, but some say his minions roam these lands still.
Terrain: Easy to moderate - some hills, thorns
Clues: Easy
Directions: Reach Hunters Creek County Park from Buffalo by taking 400 south off I-90. Take the exit for East Aurora/20A, and take 20A east to Wales Center. From the old graveyard at the center of town, head south on Hunters Creek Road. Just past the intersection of route 78, find the gravel parking lot on the right.
Clues:
Take the orange-blazed Conservation Trail at 330* (not the wider trail at 260*). Shortly, the Conservation Trail will intersect a purple-blazed trail. Follow the purple blazes. The trail will come within view of Hunter's Creek, then move away from the creek, and then come back within view, with the path running parallel to the creek. Pass over a stone ledge of a tributary and continue on. Where the path veers 230* away from Hunter's Creek and follows a dry tributary (at least it was dry when we were there), there is a dead tree trunk with mushrooms growing on it, and a flat rock at its base. Be careful, the demon dogs may be nearby!
Notes:
- No ink pad in the box, make sure you bring your own.
- The Conservation Trail is a spur of the main Finger Lakes Trail. Though a map is not needed, this section of the FLT can be seen on Finger Lakes Trail Conference map CT7, which can be obtained here: http://www.fingerlakestrail.org/. Unfortunately, the purple-blazed trail is not marked on this map.
- Please do not ask me for additional hints without offering a bribe of unpublished clues, hitchhikers, etc.
- Please email me with notes about the box: jelybean.books@comcast.net.
