Special notes about the series:
•When you find each box, you will find the answer to each riddle and the name of that box.
•Each box contains an added surprise.
•In Box #4, tell us if you think of some “other” “boxes”.
•Beware of mosquitoes and a little mud on the smaller trails if it has recently rained.
•Only the Box #1 has a journal. Bring your own ink. A compass will be handy too.
•The walk is an easy1.5 miles round trip.
This includes the small paths you will take off of the main trail.
•At Box #4, before going back to your car, there is a great spot next to the creek for a break or a picnic lunch.
Directions to the ‘Box” Series:
In Lafayette, from South Boulder Road, turn south onto Centaur Village Drive.
Drive until it dead ends at Erin Way. Park here. Enter through the green metal gate.
Walk to the blue Coal Creek Trail sign. This is where you will begin your hunt.
Box #1 Clues:
•A box that never closes
•Made for an animal
•Contains millions of tiny bits
The trail forks at this sign. Take the left trail. Follow it until you get to the second small path on the right. There is a green house across from this path and you will see a tree up ahead that looks like a giant cactus. Take this path until you come to a tree on the left with four trunks. At the base of the trunk closest to the path, under brush, is your first box.
Box #2 Clues:
•A metal box
•Heavy
•Full of useful items
Turn and go back the way you came and go to the main trail. Continue on still following the creek downstream, past the cactus tree, to the next small path on the right. Walk until the path splits into two and meets again a few yards away. When the path connects look for a big tree on the left that has multiple trunks. Under this tree, trail side, you will find Box #2 under a couple of rocks.
Box #3 Clues:
•A box made of cardboard
•Contains a pair
Continue on the path back to the main trail. You will pass signs and a garbage can on your right. Keep going around the bend and through an open fence. You will see a blue sign: Adopt a trail by Pete and Francoise Traxler. Look to your left. Go to the front of the low lying shrub tree. There will be a hole covered by a large piece of bark. This is where you will find Box #3.
Box #4 Clues:
•This box can take the heat
•Holds valuable papers
Go back to the main trail and continue on. Down a ways, around a bend, you will find rock steps along the creek. Across the trail from the steps is a gnarly multi-trunk tree that forms an arch. Go through the arch. Behind the tree, at the base, under some rocks is Box #4. Now return to the rock steps and take a rest as you stamp and enjoy the creek.
