My kids love the show “Blue’s Clues”. In fact, my son’s love of treasure hunting began with that show and so it wasn’t long after we discovered letterboxing that he asked for a Blue’s Clues themed letterbox series.
So here it is! This is a very easy, short series that is manageable for little ones on foot, trike, bike, or in a stroller and it ends at a fabulous playground that is just perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.
Make your way to Central Park in Burnaby, BC, near Boundary and Kingsway. Here is a trail map of the park: http://www.city.burnaby.bc.ca/__shared/assets/Parks_and_Trails_-_Central_Park_Map3259.pdf. Start your journey at the HC parking lot off of Kingsway, just east of Boundary. Note that the gate to this lot may be closed before 9:30am or on days when there are scheduled events at the stadium, so the next nearest parking lot is the one off of Boundary, close to the swimming pool. From the parking lot, make your way to the “Central Park” sign and trail map at the beginning of the jogging trails near the bathrooms next to the playground, where the big green asterisk is on the trail map above.
BLUE’S CLUE #1:
Do you know how to play Blue’s Clues? The song goes like this:
So to play Blue’s Clues you have to find a… pawprint! Right! ‘Cause that’s the first clue! Then we put it in our notebook, ‘cause they’re Blue’s Clues, Blue’s Clues…
Then we find another pawprint - that's the second clue – then we put it in our notebook 'cause they're who's clues? Blue's clues...
We gotta find the last pawprint, that's the third clue! We put it in our notebook 'cause they're Blue's clues... who's clues? Blue's clues! You know what to do!
Then sit down in our thinking chair and think... think... thi-i-ink! ‘Cause when we use our minds and take a step at a time, we can do anything that we wanna do!
Today Blue has left behind 3 pawprints on clues to let you know where she is hiding! So let’s start!
Do you know your left and your right? Facing the big map of the park, can you see that there is a path that goes left and two paths that go right? Can you see over at the path all the way on your right that there is a big sign there with red, yellow, and green arrows on it? It shows different jogging trails around the park. You want to follow the path that starts at that sign. As you walk, you can sing this song:
We are looking for Blue’s Clues, we are looking for Blue’s Clues, we are looking for Blue’s Clues,
Wonder where they are?
As you walk, you’ll pass by a sign on your right with a bicycle on it. Can you see it? There’s another sign under it that says we shouldn’t feed the birds or the animals in the park. Keep on walking.
Next you’ll see some picnic tables on your right side, and some other picnic tables on the left with a small white sign that says “Central Park Picnic Site #2”. Can you see that sign? Take a good look at it, because now you need to keep walking along the path until you see another sign just like it on your left. It will be near a small path that goes right. Did you find the sign?
Face the sign and then look over to your right. Can you see a big tree stump with some bushes growing behind it? Go over to that stump and then go on the side of the stamp that is the farthest away from the path. There’s lots of bark covering up a hole at the bottom of the stump. Remove the bark and dig inside to find Blue’s pawprint! But be careful and make sure no one is watching as you do this and cover it up really well with bark when you put it back.
So that’s the first clue! You have to put it in your notebook, ‘cause it’s Blue’s clues, Blue’s clues!
So what does the clue tell you? Blue is hiding near a place where you can _____. Hmm, where do you think that could be? Maybe we need to find the other clues to figure it out.
BLUE’S CLUE #2:
Great job! Now you have to find the second clue… Go back onto the path that you were on and keep going in the direction you were going in before. Can you see a big Y in the path up ahead? There’s a sign that tells you the horseshoe pitch is straight ahead, but can you find another sign, one that has red, yellow, and green arrows on it? What direction are the arrows pointing? You need to go that way!
And then as you walk, there are more signs just up ahead. There’s a green arrow pointing right, and a red and yellow arrow pointing left. You need to follow the red and yellow arrows and go left.
OK, keep your eyes open as you walk along. Can you see a big grassy area just up ahead, on your left? Keep walking on the path until you get to the end of this grassy area. Turn left where the grassy area meets the bushes, walk into the grassy area, and look ahead - there’s a big cedar tree hiding back there. Can you see it? Go to that tree and then walk behind it. There is lots of old decaying wood back there. Can you see one big piece of wood is farther away from the tree than the other pieces? It also has lots of big rocks around it. Did you find it? Go to that piece of wood, pull out some of the bark pieces at the opening, and look inside it to find Blue’s pawprint! Again make sure no one can see you and be very careful to hide it well when you put it back.
So that’s the second clue! Put it in your notebook, ‘cause it’s Blue’s clues, Blue’s clues!
So what do these clues tell you? Blue is hiding near a place where you can _____ and that you can ____. Do you know of any place like that? Let’s find our last clue to be sure.
BLUE’S CLUE #3: (unfortunately, this box is currently missing but will be replaced soon! In the meantime, the last clue is "back and forth")
Go back onto the path you were on and keep going in the direction you were going in before. Can you see a bunch of tires that you can jump through on your right? Keep walking straight past those. Just up ahead is an intersection. There are 2 paths going left and 2 paths going right. Go left on the path that is the farthest away from you.
As you walk, can you see a metal pole up ahead on your right? Go to that pole. Now keep walking very slowly and just after this pole, there is a tree stump hiding in some bushes and branches on your right, at the base of a tall tree. There’s a hole on top, filled with pieces of bark. Can you reach inside and find Blue’s last pawprint, underneath all the bark pieces? Watch out! There are many people walking around here so you have to make sure no one sees you! And be sure to hide it really well when you put it back.
So you have the last clue! Now put it in your notebook, ‘cause it’s Blue’s clues, Blue’s clues!
BLUE:
Wow, you have all 3 clues!! Now what do you need to do? Sit down in your thinking chair and think, think, think!
I bet if you walk ahead a little bit and go left into the playground, you can find a really good thinking chair. Which spot will you pick? The picnic table? That cool swirvy round chair in the wood chips? You pick a spot!
Now let’s look at our clues and see if we can figure out where Blue is hiding. She is near a place where you can _____, that you can ____, and that goes _______ and ________. Hmm, do you know where that is? Maybe walk around the playground to find it.
Did you find it! Yay! Now you can sing the song:
We have figured out Blue’s Clues, we have figured out Blue’s Clues, we have figured out Blue’s Clues, ‘cause we’re really smart!
So Blue is hiding near this spot. Go to the place you figured out from the clues. From here, you may be able to see a small area just on the other side of the path. It has a tree stump, a big rock, and a big fallen down log. Walk towards that big log. Can you see a tree growing on the other side of the log? Step over the log and go towards that tree. Then turn around and look under the log, on the side that is closest to the bushes. There's a big piece of bark and some dirt and leaves covering up the box. Remove the bark and dig in the dirt a bit... Congratulations! You’ve found Blue!! Again, be careful when you take her out and put her back in so that she is kept well hidden!
Now you can go play in the playground, and when you’re ready to head home, just go to the other side of the playground and back into the parking lot where you started. As you leave, you can sing one last song:
Now it's time for so-long, but we'll sing just one more song. Thanks for doing your part! You sure are smart! You know, with me and you and my dog Blue...We can do anything that we wanna do!
BYE BYE!
