You will find the Crossed Arrows letterbox at Narramissic -- the historic Peabody-Fitch farm built in 1797 and now owned by the Bridgton Historical Society. Narramissic is an Abenaki Indian word meaning "hard-to-find", but this will be an easy letterbox.
The farmstead includes a Federal-style house, a carriage house, barn, blacksmith's shop and acres of fields and woods. When we were there we saw 4 wild turkeys and a variety of wildflowers. You can also hike to the family quarry and bear trap.
While the grounds are always open, and are free, there is a fee to tour the house. Call (207) 647-3699 or visit the Society's web site at www.megalink.net/~bhs/ for more information.
Directions to Narramissic: Take route 302 North toward Bridgton. Turn left on Rt. 117 and proceed to the stop sign. Continue on 117 and turn left again at Rt. 107. Go approximately 2.3 miles and turn right onto Ingalls Rd (there will be a sign for Narramissic). Travel for about 1 mile, and turn left into the Narramissic Rd. driveway (also marked by another sign).
To find the Crossed Arrows letterbox: Take the mowed path to the right of the Blacksmith's shop, across the meadow toward the woods. Keep an eye out for wild turkey and numerous wildflowers. When you reach the stone wall, turn around to enjoy a scenic view.
Turn and continue just into the woods. Turn right immediately past the stone wall. You will see two pine trees near the wall. The box is between the second pine and a white birch tree. It is on the top of the stone wall, under some rocks.
