Wilson Dam, one of the dams on the TVA system of multipurpose dams, is where you will find "SAIL AWAY." At 120 feet tall, Wilson Dam Lock is the tallest single lift lock east of the Rocky Mountains. While some locks lift of lower boat in stages, Wilson Lock lifts or lowers boat and barges as much as 100 feet in a single operation. Just so you know the weight of the water on the gate on the upstream side of the main lock is 210 tons and 750 tons on the downstream side. "SAIL AWAY" will be found on the upstream side of the dam.
To reach Wilson Dam from Muscle Shoals travel north on AL 133/Wilson Dam Rd. Coming from Muscle Shoals turn right on to Reservation Rd and head toward the dam. Just before the dam turn right into the visitor overlook area. If you are traveling from Florence on AL 133 cross the Patton Island Bridge and turn left on to Reservation Rd. Look for a small blue sign noting the overlook area. Park along the curb area and walk up and read the big sign "THE TVA SYSTEM OF MULTIPURPOSE DAMS." To find "SAIL AWAY" walk 12 steps to your right and look nestled in the fork of the old cedar tree. The container is covered with twigs and leaves. Please rehide well. There are some benches close by to sit and stamp your logbook and enjoy the view.
