Trail difficulty: fairly easy; it is a dirt road with a moderate up hill portion.
Walk distance: about 1/8 mile one way
Stamp hand-carved
Status: alive and well on October 25, 2016
Go to the Samelius Trailhead which is on the north side of U. S. Highway 16 east of Hill City. It is 2.5 miles east of the U. S. 16/U. S. 385 junction and 2.7 miles west of the U. S. 16/U. S. 16A junction. Park in the trailhead lot.
From the parking area, walk north on the dirt road and around the gate. You will go past a large outcrop of rock above the road on the left side. Bear right on the road and look for 2 Oak Trees on the left side of the road with a Pine Tree up against their backside. Standing on the left side of the road in front of the Oak Trees, go at about 94 degrees (from mag. north) for about 34 steps to a 3 feet tall stump. The box is in the stump under a flat rock covered with some plant debris.
Please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag). Please make sure the lid is on tight. Please rehide the box well under the flat rock and cover with some plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.
Contact me if the box needs attention or is missing:
