I would like to start you on your journey through a quest to examine the forces of good, and bad, and I will show you a whole new kind of Holiday Inn.
I recommend daytime hours because this hunt will take you into the oldest part of the Canaseraga Cemetery which is on a rather treacherous hillside. (Do consider a drive by at night to see a spectacular display of solar lights!)
As always, when visiting cemeteries please be respectful and take special care where you step. There is significant sink-age (collapse) in the oldest part of the cemetery (you will see what I mean). Also, do avoid leaning on, stepping on/over, or otherwise endangering the memorial stones. Some are very fragile, dating back to the initial town settlement.
Back to our quest... The Cemetery lies immediately across from the American Legion. If you are unfamiliar with the town, drive straight through on main Street until you come to an Army tank.
We'll start with the bad, in hopes of ridding all evil and malevolence before we ascend the cemetery hill. At the very base of the cemetery hill, and almost directly across from the Army tank you will see a small brick structure with a sign at front reading C.1873. This building was the Canaseraga jail. If you are lucky, you will find the door open, generally this will only happen on Saturdays in the warmer months. When the door is open you may enter, sign the guestbook, explore the small jail and read some history. If the door is not open, you can still approach the building and get a peek inside through the barred windows. Obviously, being a jail, some bad souls were housed here. To begin your search for "Evil", stand facing the jail. You will see a small garden, framed by flat rocks to your left. Look above this up the steep hill just to the first rock wall formation to the left. Proceed up to this wall. "Evil" is tucked into the right hand corner of the rock formation. Please re-seal, and carefully hide evil again after stamping in.
Now that you have dispensed with any malevolent souls that may have been lurking, you can go find Live.
Standing at the location for "Evil", look to the left up the hill and you will find some flagstone steps. You can use the steps to proceed up the hill, but be warned it is steep! Another option is to walk or drive around to the main cemetery entrance and proceed up the hill until you come to the first right hand turn (adjacent to the war memorial). If driving, park here. I would not advise driving further up the road to the left, as it is dangerously narrow and there is no turn around. It will be a short walk from here to locate "live". Proceed up the road. Just before the road turns, and goes upwards, you will go off-road through the cemetery. Proceed until you find a large white obelisk for Nellie Miller, beloved 13 year old daughter. As you reflect on this young life lost too soon, look to the left slightly and you will see 2 cave-like vaults build into the side of the hill. Examine the vaults to find "Holliday". Look inside the vault through the metal door grate. Can you see the 2 vacant spots at the top? Ominous, I'm not interested in taking a room at this Holliday Inn! Let's find "Live" so we can be free of this place! Facing the metal grated door. Reach to the left, on the hillside next to a stone wall, you will find Live buried under a round stone and some branches.
Celebrate life!
