The Albany Pine Bush is located in the heart of the Capital District of Albany. It represents just one out of the 20 remaining examples of an inland pine barrens ecosystem. The naturally forming, rolling sand dunes are currently home to a variety of rare plants and animals. This includes the federally endangered Karner blue butterfly. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission was set up by the NYS legislature in 1988 to protect and manage the 3,200 acres of the Albany Pine Bush and provide the public with educational and recreational opportunities. Other activities specific to the Pine bush are our prescribed fires. These controlled fires mimic the effects of natural wildfires and restores the area to its most natural ecosystem.
Clues: Park in the Discovery Center parking lot. Take a walk towards the Discovery Center enterance. Once you get on the sidewalk, on your left you will see the Pitch Pine and Scrub Oak forest bed. Take your first left onto the dark colored path. You will need to walk 20 steps along this path, crossing over a drainage grate on the way. Once you take 20 steps, stop, turn to your right and see what you can find about an arms length into the bed. If the path starts to curve to your right, you have walked too far. HINT: look down low into our sandy soils! Once you've found the box, there will be three more clues inside the clear cover to help unlock the box lock. Good luck!
You will only be able to unlock the box lock when the Discovery Center is open.
Discovery Center Hours: Monday- CLOSED
Tuesday-Friday 9am-4pm
Saturday-Sunday 10am-4pm
