For Jack - the best friend a family could ever have.
From Interstate 580, take Exit 56 (Mt. Rose Hwy/Route 431/ North Lake Tahoe). Go west on Mt Rose Hwy/431. At the traffic light at Thomas Creek Rd. (blue Chevron Station), continue straight along Mt. Rose Hwy for another 4.6 miles. Turn into the Galena Creek Park South entrance directly across from the SECOND Galena Forest Estates sign - you will have just passed a sign that says Douglas Fir Drive. There is a big grey maintanaince building at the entrance. Stay to the right and park in the lower parking lot next to the creek.
Keeping the creek on your right and the picnic tables on your left, walk straight through the parking lot (in the same direction you drove into it) to find the short set of wooden stairs leading up and out of the parking lot. DO NOT TURN LEFT TOWARDS THE BATHROOMS. Follow the gravel path to your right until you get to the Galena Creek sign that has Bitterbrush Trail and Nature Trail on it. Cross the wooden bridge over the creek and continue until you get to the fork in the trail. Turn right to continue on the Bitterbrush Trail. After approximately 58 paces, before the broken tree with the face of a bear, turn left onto the first split off the trail. Follow that trail until you come to a small pine tree shaped like a V on the left of the path. Stand in the middle of the trail facing the pine tree so you are looking at the bigger part of the trunk and the small part of the trunk is hidden behind the big part. Walk in the direction you are facing approximately 58 paces. You will pass by a rectangular concrete block on your right and will end up at a big double-trunked tree (the second trunk is behind front trunk so you won't see it until you get there). The tree also has a small attached stump at the bottom. Turn right & walk 14 paces to a large rock and wood grouping. Within the wood and rock triangle you will find Jack's Paw buried under pine needles, cones, bark &, most importantly, a small rock. Please rebury it exactly as you found it!
