Trail difficulty: fairly easy; however the trail is entirely dirt and there are some rocky areas; it is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.
Walking distance: one mile one way.
Stamp hand-carved
Status: alive and well on January 22, 2019

The box is along the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail near Tubac. From I-10 take I-19 south. Take exit #34 to Tubac. Follow signs to Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Just before entering the Park’s parking lot, turn south to Anza Trailhead parking. You can get a map to the trail at the State Historic Park Visitor Center.

From the parking lot walk east a short distance on the Anza Trail to an opening in the fence on the right; go through it. After passing an Information Kiosk, the Anza Trail goes generally south and east and is marked by white trail markers. You will soon go through a large flat barren field. After leaving the field you will see in front of you a bunch of bat boxes along a fence line. Go to the bat boxes, turn left (east), go through a gate, and continue on the Anza Trail following the white trail markers. You will then pass through a narrow tree covered portion of the trail. The Santa Cruz River will be on your right. You will then see on your left (a little in the distance) an athletic field and playground which is a county park. You will then come to a fence line corner with a large wood corner post. Continue on the trail to the next large wood CORNER post where the fence makes a 90 degree turn to the left. From that post, continue on the trail for about 90 more steps to a white Anza Trail marker off right side of trail. From the white pole go exactly West for about 16 steps (crossing trail) to old dead split prone tree. The box is in the split covered by a wide piece of bark. Be alert for snakes and scorpions.

Please please be sure the contents are triple ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, the two are in the larger ziploc bag, and all of it is in another larger ziploc; and, put all of it INSIDE the box). Please rehide the box well under the bark, twigs & plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.

This is a great birding area. Enjoy nature!

For an interesting return trip, continue on the trail until it crosses the paved road. Turn left on the paved road and take Calle Iglesia back to Tubac village. As you approach the front of the old church, take the path on the left and cut through the state park parking lot to get back to the trailhead.
