To find this box start at Farrell Park in South Burlington. You will see the sign on Swift Street near the intersection with Farrell Street. Park at the playground and start walking on the bike path. Head to the left toward Overlook Park. Go up the hilll, past the ball field and up to where the trail skirts a field. As you walk around the field you will find a trail to the right. Follow that to the Gump bench. Take a seat and enjoy the view.
When you get up, take the woods trail ahead of you that goes to the left.
***Revised 10/2014: Imagine my surprise to find that this bench can be moved and sometimes faces in different directions! Many thanks to those who pointed out the confusing clues. So, let's just say that as you enter the woods you take the trail to the left. ***
Keeping left, follow this around the crest of the hill. As you round the bend and have a good view of the marsh below, look left to see a long fallen tree which broke in half when it fell. This tree is part of a two sister right next to the trail. About six steps to the left of the break there is a small tree touching the fallen. Immediately opposite, under the fallen, you will find the letterbox. When you finish, if you continue on the trail it will take you back to the paved trail just before the bridge.
The Champlain letterbox stamp is based on the logo for Lake Champlain Chocolates. Now that you have taken this little three quarter mile walk you may agree that it is a good idea to replenish your burned calories by taking a trip to the nearby chocolate factory on Pine Street in Burlington. Enjoy.
