*** Part of my Famous Trees Of TX Series ***
Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 100 yards RT)
Recommended Ink: brown & green
Status: alive
Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.
According to Texas A&M University tradition, if you walk under the boughs of the Century Tree with a lover, you will be together forever. Likely planted around the turn of the twentieth century, The Century tree symbolizes the enduring bonds of the university as well as those forged under the boughs of the tree. You can see the tree on campus, then find this letterbox in nearby College Station Cemetery.
Directions:
From Hwy 6 (Earl Rudder Frwy) go west on University Drive about 3 miles to Tauber Street, turn right and park at a meter. Walk southeast on Tauber across University and continue as it becomes Asbury St to Ross St. Go around right side of Heaton Hall and continue past Bolton Hall to the Century Tree behind it in an open area. For the letterbox, drive northeast on University Dr about 1 mile to Texas Ave, turn right and go about 2 miles to College Station Cemetery on the right. Enter and go straight to fountain on left and park nearby.
Clues:
From fountain, walk north across road you parked on to multi-trunk cedar tree at fence between Steen and Bryan stones. LB is within trunks 1 foot high under grass.
