Box 3
'Treewhalloper'
Alum Creek State Park, Delaware County
Easy(Very flat)

Hello all! As usual, bring bug spray and a compass. Also, the box's notebook says something about a story, ignore that. I was originally going to write a storyline to go with the instructions, but I had already posted several boxes with the mammal fact cards, and couldn't think of a good reason for people to be looking for info on raccoons and stuff. So no story. Sorry.

~INSTRUCTIONS~

Going South on Lewis Center Road, enter the Visitor's Center parking lot. There's a post next to a power meter on the North side of the building; stand with your back to it and take a 14° heading to a broad gravel trail through the picnic area(Notice the Hawthorne trees you go through; aren't they cool?). Take the path past the '8' marker on the right(we determined that those aren't mile markers...we're not sure what they are...); note the many invasive plants growing in profusion, such as Russian Olive, Garlic Mustard, and Multiflora Rose. Cross a short stretch of grass, note a very gnarly old sugar maple about 10 yds. off trail on the right at the next westward bend. Pass a cut on the right with an overgrown trail through it and bird box #18(are there any birds home?). Enter the pine grove, pass the not-mile-marker 7 on the right. At the 'T', go North-East, following the white blazes over a bridge. Travel due West at the next 'T'(follow the brown sign with the white hiker painted on it). You'll pass post 5 on the right, then a tree sheared in half by lightning(on the same side). Around the east bend(directly after), find the lover's Beech on the left side of the trail. Go down three ash trees to the right of it(note they're all dead from Emerald Ash Borer damage), stop at the third. Across the trail when you're standing with your back to the ash, about 18 paces at a 155 degree heading, is a low stump. The 'Treewhalloper' box is under the back side of the stump. Once you find it, you can continue on the trail the way you were headed; it loops around back to the bridge. If the box isn't there or is damaged or the stump is gone or something, please e-mail me at: tiredmom5kidz@yahoo.com. Have fun...
Laetus Indagatus,
Zanath Shadow

Post script - the title of this box is a little Redwall tribute. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about(probably most of you), Redwall is a series of books about animals and they jokingly call the squirrels Treewhallopers a lot. They're great books, you should read them. :)
