Terrain: Easy - But watch out for Poision Ivy in the summer
Enter park at Main Enterance. Stop at gate house and get a trail map. Find Berta Shelter and park nearby. (During the winter months the parking lot nearest the shelter may be closed. Park near the Red Barn by the Center for the Performing Arts enterance.) Behind the shelter look for an awesome oak tree. Pick up the trail in front of the tree and follow it to your left. Find the lightning strike tree that guards the St. Joseph, IN and Barrien County, MI borders. Search the fallen limb of the guardian tree for the prize you seek.
The park is full of lots of hiking trails - all easy and beautiful. Many lead along the St. Joseph River. Plan to spend some extra time here to enjoy the gardens, have a picnic or let the kids plan on one of the many playgrounds.
