This is the last in my Chinese New Year series. The first box I planted in 2005 was the Year of the Rooster, which is my year. And now I end with the Year of the Monkey as the 12th box, which is Martini Man’s year!

Around the globe, the Chinese New Year celebrations will take place based on February 8th 2016, which is the start of the Lunar New Year. Preparations for the New Year often begin during the last month of the lunar year. It is an auspicious occasion, and great detail is taken in its readiness. The home must be cleaned thoroughly. The past year's dirt is swept away, and clutter is straightened out. This is done so that negative aspects of the past year are not brought forward to the New Year. On New Year’s Eve, family members must return to the parent's home for a special meal together. Various foods are prepared and eaten because of their symbolic significances. The food must be abundant, and there must be some left over at the end of the meal. The New Year will therefore start with plenty. It is hoped that there then will be abundance throughout the year.

In Chinese Astrology there are five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) and twelve animals (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig) forming a complete cycle of sixty. This means there are five different types of Monkey years: wood monkey, fire monkey, earth monkey, metal monkey and water monkey. 2016 is a Red Fire Monkey year.

The year of the Monkey is one where absolutely anything and everything is possible, a year when things that appear impossible will succeed. The year of the Monkey is ideal for a quantum leap in your life! Now is the time to shake things up, create change, and innovate a new path. There will be more than enough action and opportunity to keep you busy. In a Monkey year, it’s fine to just make it up as you go along. However don’t be gullible and trust the wrong people, or wily Monkey will take all the peanuts and leave you only shells.

People born in a year of the Monkey are witty, intelligent, and have a magnetic personality. Personality traits like mischievousness, curiosity, and cleverness, make them very naughty. Monkeys are masters of practical jokes, because they like playing most of the time. Though they don't have any bad intentions, their pranks sometimes hurt the feelings of others. Those born in a year of the Monkey are fast learners and crafty opportunists. They have many interests and need partners who are capable of stimulating them. While some like the eccentric nature of Monkeys, others don't trust their sly, restless, and inquisitive nature. Although they are clever and creative, monkeys can't always exhibit their talent properly. Monkeys like to take challenges and they prefer urban life to rural.

General Monkey characteristics: Intelligent with a sense of humor, original thinker, practical, carries out plans successfully, curious, observant, friendly and introvert. They are extremely versatile and can do well at almost anything. Success however can easily go to their head, bringing out a latent arrogance that often alienates friends. But it is rarely long before the Monkey's agreeable humor and other engaging sociable qualities win them back. Older and wiser Monkeys are able to channel their energetic and fertile imaginations into the solving of extremely complex problems
