There's something majestic about big bridges, isn't there? The Taft Bridge, also known as the Connecticut Avenue Bridge, is a beautiful bit of historic architecture reaching up out of Rock Creek Park.
Start at the Rock Creek Park Exercise Course, near the intersection of 24th Street NW and Rock Creek Parkway. Try not to disturb those industrious people actually trying to work out. Take a moment to admire the magnificence of the unreinforced arches of the bridge as they bound over the trees. Take a picture maybe.
Following the pedestrian/bike path, carefully cross the street towards the bridge. Stick to the path along Rock Creek Parkway; admire the new-looking wooden guard rail on your right!
Just before you cross under the majestic arch of the bridge, STOP! Move off the path on the left side (since there's that nice guardrail on the right) and walk to the corner of the bridge footing, where the arch plunges into the ground. There's some lovely green shrubbery and foliage there -- you should explore it! (Carefully, of course.)
Starting at the corner's edge, take 5 paces. Look left! Nestled down amongst the foliage and ivy, perhaps you'll find the squirrel's secret stash at the bottom of that arch. Good luck!
