The Houston Colt .45s was the first major league baseball team in Texas, and it existed under that name from 1962 to 1964. They played in a temporary ballpark named Colt Stadium and it was proclaimed by players as the hottest place on the face of the Earth. The team finished near the bottom of the National League all three years and on April 23, 1964, Ken Johnson became the first player in MLB history to pitch a no-hitter for nine innings and lose the game. There were some bright spots too: Gene Elston’s beginning as the lead radio voice for Houston began in 1962 and future Hall of Famer Joe Morgan made his debut in 1963. In 1965 the Astrodome was completed, becoming the first indoor stadium in the world, and the team changed their name to the Astros. As if symbolic of the end of the Colt .45s era, the team owners sold Colt Stadium to a minor league baseball team in Mexico for $100,000 and the new owners moved the entire structure south of the border. As a young boy I still remember watching the Colts play and decided to dedicate this box to their memory. You can find it at E.R. & Ann Taylor Park, not too far from where Colt Stadium used to be.

Directions:
From S. Loop 610 in Houston take Hwy 288 south for about 1.5 miles. Exit Reed Road, turn right (west) and go about 1 mile to E.R. & Ann Taylor Park on the left just before Almeda Rd. Drive through the gate on the gravel road and park by the pavilion.

Clues:
Walk right on trail in front of pavilion, going past bird blind on left, to a huge tree on left 17 steps off trail just before boardwalk. LB is at back left base under sticks & leaves.

Hike length: 0.1 miles
