Directions to Kentucky Camp:
From Tucson, take I-10 east to Exit #281 (Highway 83 Sonoita/Patagonia). Travel south on Highway 83 for approximately 21 miles to the Gardner Canyon Road. Turn right on Gardner Canyon Road and continue a quarter-mile to Forest Service Road 163. Turn right on Forest Service Road 163 and continue approximately 5 miles to the junction of 163 and the entrance to Kentucky Camp. Stay to the left and continue to the parking lot and gate that marks the entrance to Kentucky Camp. There are signs to Kentucky Camp from Highway 83. After the turnoff from Highway 83, the road is a dirt road. It is suitable for regular cars but be prepared for them to get dusty!

Directions to the boxes:
The parking lot is outside the camp itself. Park here. You will have to go through the gate to walk down the driveway to the camp. Walk past the admin building on the left and follow the AZ trail signs out to the fence line. The series starts here.

Box #1: Flattop Jones, Sr.
Immediately after going through the gate, sign-in at the registration station. They like to keep track. Before you actually start the hike on the AZT, turn right and follow a small side trail that runs parallel to the fence line. Locate the 5th green fence post. Box is at the base of the tree under a brownish rock between the fence and the tree.

Box #2: Pruneface
Make your way back to the AZ trail and start on this trail. Look for a brown marker on the right side of the trail. 30 steps from this brown marker is a 20’ tall snag on the right side with a juniper very close. There is a short stump on the left side of the snag. Look under the backside of the short stump to find the box.

Box #3: Influence
Continue on the trail until you reach a very large deadfall of trees on your left. Looking through the “V” in the deadfall, spot at 70* a double trunked oak tree. Make your way up to the tree. The box is between the tree and a large white rock at its base.

Box #4: Mole
Continue on the trail to a point where the trail comes up. There will be a trail marker on your left and a small 8-foot juniper on the right. Stand by the trail marker. At 240* you will see a double trunked oak with a “bowl” at its base. (The “bowl” tree is uphill behind a waving snag.) The box is in the “bowl” under a rock and covered with some plant debris.

Box #5: Tess Trueheart
Continue on the trail to the point where the trail comes very close to the fence on the right and has a knoll on the left. Spot a brown trail marker on the left and stop there. Look to the left of the main trail to see a faint social trail going uphill. Take 40 steps up this social trail and the turn left at sawgrass clump to make your way to the top of the knoll. Look under the first oak on the left (when facing the main trail, which is now downhill from you). The box is under a red rock at the base of the oak tree.

Box #6: Dick Tracy
Make your way back to the main trail to continue to the gate. From the gate, locate a very large oak tree at ~110*. Walk through the gate and count off 110-120 steps towards that oak tree. Stop before the trail continues out of small wash. The oak is now about 20 steps off the trail to your right. The box is on the uphill (southeast) side of the tree which has a burl at its base.

Hike length: 1-2 miles
