Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 100 yards RT)
Status: alive
James Otto Carleton was born in Comanche on August 19, 1906, and eventually moved to Fort Worth where he attended TCU and launched his career as pitcher. In 1925 he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and was assigned to the Austin Senators in the Class D Texas Association, then the Houston Buffs in 1927. By 1931 he was pitching well enough to be regarded by many as the equivalent of Dizzy Dean, also pitching for the Buffs, and earned his nickname Tex. In 1932 he was moved up to the Cardinals, and was part of the Gas House Gang championship team in 1934. He eventually played for the Chicago Cubs and Brooklyn Dodgers, winning 100 games and pitching a no-hitter in 1940, his final season. He died on January 12, 1977, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, where you can find this box.
