Homeowners are responsible for maintaining and testing their own private well water. Contaminant concerns can include: bacteria, arsenic, radium, uranium. It is recommend having private well water tested annually because many contaminants cannot be detected by sight, smell, or taste. The only way to know if a water supply has been contaminated is to have it tested. A list of approved labs can be found at www.ct.gov/dph/drinking-water.
There is a concern for bacteria and blue green algae (cyanobacteria) at public beaches. Blue-green algae blooms are considered harmful due to the potential to cause health effects in people and pets over-exposed to these organisms. During summer months you can monitor beach closures at: ct.gov/dph/ DPH/Environmental-Health/Recreation/Public-Beaches.
