Living in the Southern Tier of Western New York State, you need to be careful because you never know when you will cross paths with a wild animal! You need to learn how to recognize animal tracks along your path, so you know who you're sharing it with! With that thought in mind, I carved this stamp to help you be aware just in case someone's been meandering along your path with bear feet! On the Northern side of Rte 70 between Swain and Dalton, you will find Newville Rd. Less than a mile down Newville Rd. is the parking area for the state land foot trail #13. You will see a barrier gate with a stop sign, to prevent motorized vehicles from using the trail. Proceed along the trail for about 90 yards. On your left will be what appears to be an old apple orchard. The trail will bear to the left, going up a hill. Head up the hill, and about 80 yards up there will be 3 tree stumps along the right of the trail. You could sit on one for a bit of a rest, but why would you stop when you only have about 50 yards to go? Plus, there might be a bear looking for a you-sized snack! At the top of the hill the trail opens up into a meadow with 3 pine trees in a line across it. To your right will be 11 maple trees growing out of one trunk, surrounded by rosehips and huckleberries. In the middle of the 11 maples will be the tracks you've been following. There's a little prize for the first finder! Good luck, and watch out for bears!
