Difficulty: Moderate. Elevation gain
Distance to Letterbox: About 4 Miles RT
This box is located on the Butler Gulch trail. Hike had many waterfalls, then opens up to a nice Alpine Bowl. Box is not at end of trail but close to where you leave the tree line. Good hike.
Directions:
From I-70, go north on Hwy 40 toward Winter Park. When you reach Berthoud Falls, look for left turn after town onto Henderson Mine Rd/Jones Pass. Once you make the turn, follow the road up past the mine, staying right. Look for parking area on the left for Butler Gulch by gate (do not take road up to Jones Pass).
To the Letterbox:
Go past gate and follow the trail up. Trail will pass waterfalls, and stream crossings. Finally you will curve right and come out of the trees into an open meadow and boulders on left. At boulder on left edge of trail (great sitting rock), continue on the trail for 175 steps. Go left off trail up the slope for 10 yards to the back of a rock outcroping. Box is at base with rock on top. This outcropping forms a point above the trail, so you should see it when coming out of the trees.
Hike length: 3-5 miles
