This letterbox was hidden on my 50th birthday because what else is there to do when the world is under quarantine? Travel, restaurants, bars, skiing, gyms, school, work, and even the forest are CLOSED! O’live to be in the outdoors so I took this special day to go for a little hike. I can Revel in birthday activities later in June (now, that’s the spirit).

Head East on Highway 26 towards Brightwood, OR. Take a left at E. Sleepy Hollow Road (near mp 35). Turn left onto E. Barlow Trail Road and cross the Sandy River. You’ll see a restroom on the left. Turn left into the parking lot at Barlow Wayside Park.

As you approach the forest, take the trail on the left. Stay on the Upper Trail by going right at both Ys in the path. Keep following the trail and cross that bridge when you come to it. You won’t need a map to find this box.

You’ll be tempted to sit at the bench atop the stairs, but there’s a better place to be by yourself and maybe enjoy a cocktail (dirty, wet or dry).

Ignore the unmaintained trail. Just like we’re forced to ignore our hair, nails, teeth and bodies during this crazy time.

Continue ahead on Falls Loop and take the off-shoot on the right to sit and admire the refreshing waterfall on the rocks. I can’t smell any juniper in the area.

From the boulder, walk 6’ toward the Falls (you’re all familiar with that distance by now). Look to your left to a large tree next to a snag. Look low for the cove-hid letterbox. Make sure to shake, stir, and garnish it with sticks and leaves when you leave.

Hike length: 1 mile
