Every year New Zealanders send around 2.5 million tonnes of waste to landfill. The majority of this waste is not reprocessed or recycled and doesn’t break down over time. Not only does this have a huge negative impact on our environment, throwing away things wastes resources. It wastes the raw materials and energy used in making the items and it wastes money.
There are many communities in NZ that are coming together to work towards reducing their environmental impact and the town of Raglan sets a great example. After Raglan's landfill closed in 2000, the town decided to find an alternative to transporting all its waste to a tip in the Waikato. This led to the establishment of a non-profit community organization dedicated to recycling and conservation of the area - Xtreme Zero Waste. Every year an increasing volume and percentage of waste is recycled and as of 2010 over 70% of the community's waste is prevented from reaching the landfill.
This was achieved in a variety of ways - on site there is a metal yard and a wood yard that resells second-hand building materials. Previously on average 300 cubic meters of building materials were being sent to landfill each year, now much of that is being reused instead. Garden waste is turned into compost and there is a Reuse shop for anything and everything that could be given a second life.
-- This cache is made of repurposed materials from Xtreme Zero Waste (gas cylinder, golf clubs, metal pipe, caster wheels, plastic containers) a few unused utensils, a discarded hard hat that was found while on a walk, rubber stamp from an op shop and a little elbow grease. --
The lock code is: 1802
