(2004: This one is been reported missing.)

We placed this one on a recent road trip to find Der Mad Stamper's Northwest Kansas Lakes series (http://members.aol.com/letterboxr/usa/nwkslake.htm). We think those are a must-visit for 'boxers from this part of the country.

And if you're visiting this part of Kansas, another must-see is of course the World's Largest Ball of Twine in Cawker City! (http://skyways.lib.ks.us/kansas/towns/Cawker/twine.html)

Directions:

From the Ball of Twine, drive one mile east on KS HWY 24. On your left you will see the back side of a sign for Cawker City Lakeside Park. I'm not sure why there's no sign on this side, but turn right (South) anyway and proceed toward the park.

You will pass the golf course pro shop and playground on your right. The road will dead end facing Waconda Lake, with a green on your right.

Turn right, and drive along the dirt road toward the dam. You will have the lake on your left and the golf course on your right.

Drive until the road stops near the dam at a circle drive. Park here and proceed on foot.

There is a short extension of the road that goes about 20 yards. Walk down this road to the dam at a bearing of 210 degrees.

The dam is made of concrete terraces or steps. You should reach the base of the dam right where a new terrace starts (this is not the corner of the dam).

Walk toward the lake on this terrace, crossing several rough spots along the way. Stay on this terrace, even though new ones will be added below you. Stop when you have gone 90-95 paces.

Four steps below you, there is a section of the concrete that looks like the dam's teeth have been broken out in a jagged pattern. (This is on the sixth step from the bottom.)

Standing on this spot, the highway bridge is at 181 degrees, there is a point of land sticking into the lake at 100 degrees, and the brown metal pro shop is at 30 degrees.

The box is wedged underneath the broken step, with a stone blocking it in. Be sure to put the stone back!
