Terrain Difficulty: Easy (slight slope, 0.5 mile RT)
The Backbone Trail is a National Recreation Trail extending 68 miles across the Santa Monica Mountains from Point Mugu State Park east to Will Rogers State Historic Park. Construction began in the early 1980s and was completed in 2016. There are several trailheads for hiking sections of the trail, including the Kanan Trailhead used to find this box. NOTE: This box is not on NPS land.
Directions:
From US 101 go south on Kanan Rd (which becomes Kanan Dume Rd) for about 8 miles to the Newton Canyon parking lot and Kanan Backbone Trailhead on the right.
Clues:
Facing kiosk, walk left (south) on the Backbone Trail up and across the tunnels as it curves left to power lines. Follow them to where trail bends right and power lines go right at pole. Go back on trail a short way to second tree on right, 7 steps off trail. LB is at base under rocks and weeds.
