The Pacific Rim Whale Festival is an annual event celebrating the return of Pacific Grey Whales to the West coast of Vancouver Island on their Northern migration route. The week-long festival held in March hosts a number of fun events throughout the Tofino area and inspired this box. It can be found near Middle Beach on the Tonquin Trail, an easy walking trail that passes through rainforests along the Pacific coast.
Directions:
Drive south on First St then right on Arnet Rd, which becomes Tonquin Park Rd, and park at end if you don't mind paying, or park on nearby streets for free and walk to trailhead. You can also walk to Middle Beach much quicker from Middle Beach Lodge if you don't take too long since parking is restricted to guests. For this access, drive west on MacKenzie Beach Rd to its end, staying right at all jcts, and park in small area on right.
Clues:
These clues are from Middle Beach Lodge parking area. Walk back down road a short way to trailhead to Middle Beach on left. Go on it to beach and continue right across it to end and find the Tonquin Trail entering the trees. Go up it past a trail sign, outhouse and another sign to a viewpoint with a small wood fence on left. Go back 28 steps to large stump with tree growing out of it on left. Go right off trail 8 steps to back side of tree leaning toward you. LB is under a rock & needles.
