Carved and planted by Martini Man

Last checked/found: 24-Jul-2024

Location: ekaL noynaC esoR

Distance: Depends how you access the area. Driving in can shorten the distance a LOT. But it costs $10 a day per vehicle to get in. The no cost approach is parking in a lot at the entrance (along Catalina Highway near MM 17 – 18) and then walking about 1.7 miles down to the location and then 1.7 miles back to your vehicle. It’s a worthy trek, but the road is steep walking out.

Terrain: dirt/rock trail with no appreciable elevation gain. If you elect to walk down to the location that adds road walking.

Please carefully check for trail traffic before you retrieve or replace the box and be sure the box is hidden well so it isn’t noticed by noxers.

Clues: Make your way down to the body of water to be found at this location. What you want is the path on the left that travels around the water. When the box was planted, we went down to the handicapped parking area and followed a gravel path that was to the left of the concrete pathway. We then crossed a gravelly area to the boulder lined path and did a short climb to get on it. There is another way to get to the path following another path behind a no parking sign. That way winds more and is rather overgrown, but it cuts out the climb. Your choice, but be sure that when you start walking the body of water is on your right.

Now on the dirt trail, continue onward for 5 – 10 minutes until you reach the first reedy area in the water. The trail makes a hairpin turn that goes left and then right around the reeds. At the apex of the turn there is a low-cut stump in the trail. Stop there and find a path on the left that goes into the woods. The path is approximately 100 degrees from the stump.

Follow this new path up and over a slight rise in the terrain. You will note that the trail now descends. Follow it for a short distance to where you are right next to a burled and gnarly pin oak. To double check your location you should also see a very tall pine snag behind and to the left of the oak. Stand on the other side of the pin oak and sight 20 degrees. Walk about 10 – 12 steps and you should arrive at a shrub next to a medium size log. At the base of the shrub under rocks and duff is your own Arizona rose.

Please send an email so we know how the box is doing. Thanks!
