Terrain Difficulty: Easy (slight slope, 1.5 mi RT)

Just southeast of Rye, in the late 1960s, the last surviving population of the Arkansas River Colorado Greenback Cutthroat Trout was discovered in Apache Creek. Until then, this native trout had been thought to be extinct, but through much nurturing they have now been reintroduced into 19 creeks in Colorado. In 1994, the state legislature designated the Greenback Cutthroat Trout as the official state fish, and you can find this box dedicated to it on the Greenhorn Trail.

Directions:
From CO 165, go west on Main St for 0.4 mi, then continue onto Park Rd for another 0.4 mi before going right on Cuerna Verde Rd for 1.7 mi to pullout parking by Greenhorn Trail sign.

Clues:
Walk down the trail across the bridge over creek and continue through private land, crossing the creek on rocks twice more, to Boundary of National Forest sign on left. Continue 23 steps, then go left off trail 8 steps up to a large boulder hanging over other boulders. LB is below front right part of hanging boulder in a crevice between the lower boulders, covered by a rock & needles.
