Forge Pond Conservation Area is nestled between Forge Road and Reed Road. Trails run along the north side of the pond and extend along the Noquochoke River, which feeds the pond. This property is popular with fishermen. Terrain is rolling with some short steep sections over uneven ground. Protection of this property was made possible by funding from the Westport Community Preservation Fund, The Trustees, and private donors.
As you drive up to this property take a minute to check-out the waterfall. It’s always a cool treat to see the calm of the pond vs. the power of the falls. For your clues, take the yellow path and follow it towards the water. As you approach the waters edge the trail will lead to the left…follow it along the water line. The trail will drop down a bit, then back up, then eventually come to a point where you can trek up to the left and pick up a blue trail. Take the blue trail and make your way across back towards your starting point. You will cross many downed trees, as of today, there were four of them. Don’t worry, nothing too big you can’t easily step over! Following the blue trail you will eventually make your way to a massive rock at a cool look-out point. If you happen to snag a picture there, please share it with me! As for the letterbox, it's hidden snugly inside a crease in the rock. Make your way to the right front side of the rock. You should see some decaying wood and bark nestled in and along the rock. Just behind a piece of bark, down in the crease, is your treasure! Please remember to reseal the box tightly and place it back as you found it.
As we continue to celebrate Massachusetts Farm to School Harvest of the Month, this letterbox will highlight the cool carrot. Did you know that carrots come in many colors including orange, white, yellow, red, and purple and are made up of 87-95% water!?
Check out these other cool fun facts about carrots:
1. Carrots are one of the world's sugariest vegetables, with the exception of beets.
2. The biggest carrot ever recorded weighed 22 pounds 7 ounces, and the longest was 20 feet by 5.9 inches.
3. Carrots are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B6, folate, and minerals like calcium and magnesium.
4. Eating too many carrots can cause your skin to turn yellowish, a condition called "carotenemia". (Yikes!)
Ok, enough about carrots…get out there and go find that letterbox!
