REPORTED MISSING, MARCH 2005, unconfirmed
This letterbox will take you to a pretty spot near the J. Percy Priest Lake and Dam, just east of Nashville. Take the Stewarts Ferry exit 219 off of I-40, and head south-ish until you come to a stoplight (Bell Road). Turn left at the light...You'll see the large brown sign on the corner, indicating that you've located J. Percy Priest Lake and Dam. Cross over the dam, and watch for your first opportunity to turn left beyond it (Dodson Chapel Road). Be prepared to turn left again, on the first unmarked road before the freeway underpass. This road winds its way prettily through the woods, and ends in a parking lot at the base of the dam. Stairs go down towards the river on either side of the parking lot...you need to head towards the set nearest the dam, but before the stairs make a turn, strike out across the grass. Follow the treeline as it curves up and away from the dam...you're in for an uphill trudge! As you near the crest of the hill, you'll still be on mown grasses, pleasantly shaded by several trees. Watch for three trees clumped together (two of them have double trunks, so it may look like five) with a fallen log at their base. The beaver-ish ambition letterbox is tucked into the end of the log, covered by a rock and some strips of bark. There are some handy rocks just downhill from here, which give you a beautiful view of the river and dam below. Have a seat and stamp in...and be careful on your way back down!
Miscellaneous Notes:
*There is no stamp pad in this letterbox, so bring your own.
*This is a steep climb up a grassy slope...slippery when wet!
*Occassionally the US Army Corps of Engineers has the entrance road leading down to the dam blocked off. If so, you'll just have to come back another day.
*Make sure to get the clues for the Sitting Duck letterbox...it's very close by!
The usual disclaimers apply.
