This series of 2 boxes is located in Lamoille Canyon in the very scenic Ruby Mountains. Take your camera and a picnic!
Lamoille is approximately 18 miles from Elko, and then a 12-mile drive up the canyon. The road is paved. These are drive-by boxes and the terrain to the boxes is mild: one flat area, and one bit of a small slope climb. The area is dog friendly.
DIRECTIONS: From I-80 take the Elko exit #301. Head South on the Mountain City Hwy., then turn left on Idaho St., then right on 5th. St., and left onto the Lamoille Hwy (SR 227), heading southeast. Just before the small town of Lamoille, turn right on Lamoille Canyon Rd.
CLUES:
Box #1: Picture This
Approximately 5 ½ miles up the Lamoille Canyon, there is a glacial overlook pull-out with kiosk describing the glacier, on the right side of the road. Park here.
Look across the street and notice the black on the rock wall. To the right of this is a large rock sitting alone. Look underneath the left side, behind some loose rocks for the box. Of course, be cautious crossing the street, please be discreet and re-hide well.
Box #2: Take a Picnic
Approximately 4 ½ miles more up the canyon, turn into the Terraces Picnic Area, on the left. There are 2 parking areas, and you'll want to begin your search in the first parking area (not the one in front of the restrooms).
From the very first parking space, as you turn into this area, look up the small slope at the pine tree. There are 2 Quaking Aspens in front of the pine tree. One of the Quakie's trunk is peeling. Reach down between these 2 trees and under the rock, with loose rocks on it, is the box. Be careful climbing the few feet up the slope, trying not to disturb the growth, and be discreet, and re-hide well.
Do go on up 2 miles to the end of the road, for more beautiful scenery. Also, take the time to see the charming small town of Lamoille, by turning right on SR 227.
